Just keep coming back to - disappointing......
I visited Los Angeles from the Midwest in 1985, heard them on the radio (one of those moments that you remember where you were, what you were doing, etc) - and have been a fan since. Have been to several The Music Man concerts over the years, including last year's show at the Pageant, which was one of the best I've ever seen, any band - hands down. The Music Man has always been a go-to band for me; always excited for a new album and tour. I'm a fan of 27 years.
The band finally came on - and rocked the house for about 6 songs, but after this, seemed to run out of steam, and to really not care; merely mailed it in. It didn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the hockey game was the reason for the big delay, and why the show became more disjointed the further it went on - everyone had rushed back over the bridge from downtown and was tired. The Toadies played, played, and played; to the point where we wondered if The Music Man was ever going to show. At one point, Mike remarked from the stage, "what to play?" several times which really made us think that he was just winging it. Also, Mike complained of the heat in the place, then seemed to deliberately s-l-o-w down the show until the air was turned on. During the stage patter, Mike Ness shared with all of us that they had been to the hockey playoffs, to watch the LA Kings beat the St. Louis Blues. The lackluster show combined with the severe attitude of the Pops' staff, not to mention how understaffed the bar was (waiting 30+ minutes for a semi-cool canned beer poured into a solo cup is RIDICULOUS!) made this just such a disappointing night out. These tickets and the night out were our wedding anniversary present to each other; with a 4 year old, we only get out about 3 - 4 times a year to a show. I was really looking forward to this night out for months, and ended up being just so disappointed. Not interested in returning to Pops (at all), and will think long/hard before dropping this kind of cash/spending an all-too-rare night out on a The Music Man show, which just makes me really, horribly sad.
All of this being said, though, I must admit -- I was really disappointed by this show! I'm rating this as "average" simply because I know what the band is capable of, and what I've seen them do before; everyone can have an off night, I guess. As it was, we left during the encore, and saw lots of other people doing the same. I have to tell you, though, if this had been my first time seeing The Music Man -- I would have not been impressed at all.
